"We believe that ideas only become great when they are challenged and tested."

— From Creativity, Inc. by Ed Catmull

"Are we doing enough to be genuinely disruptive?"

That's one of the questions the Gates Foundation's Dan Greenstein posed on a recent episode of our podcast. It's a big question, and one that has become central to my work in the last few years.

This year at the NACUBO Annual Meeting, I talked more about disruption through the lens of creativity. How do we truly engage our teams in support of the mission? Where do our biggest ideas come from, and how do we muster the courage to make them a reality? What is our role as leaders in creating a culture that is aware and supportive of change?

You can find out more about each of the sessions I lead and download handouts from each — just scroll down. Thank you all for such a rewarding and engaging week in Minneapolis.

Creatively Engaging Your Divisions To Serve the Mission

How do you build a culture of creativity and innovation practice that forwards the mission? It starts with a recognition there exists big ideas that have yet to be executed on and the importance of encouraging a new set of competencies and skills. These new skills require uncovering the unseen forces that keep a team from excelling, including fear of failure, lack of candor, and unwillingness to put individual needs aside. Learn how the Senior Vice Chancellor at University of Colorado Boulder unleashed a new level of energy across a 300-person division that generated 60 cross-functional projects to impact university-wide delivery of services and programs.

Using Pixar’s approach to creating an exceptional brand, the Boulder team read the book Creativity, Inc., then prepared itself to engage in a deep dive how to incubate ideas across Finance, Facilities, HR, IT, Communications, Performance Improvement Office, Data Analytics and other departments. Culminating in a two day event, division leaders applied the Pixar model to their own mission and vision, ending with an incubator session and live pitch to other division leaders. The lasting effects are seen through the charge to develop innovative proposals and solutions to everyday problems and taking the book and the message to the director level of the organization.

Generating Bold Ideas to Drive Change

Fresno State has continuously implemented successful improvement projects across administrative and academic units for nearly a decade. Their challenge was to move from individual projects to a sustainable culture of innovation and improvement. In Fall 2014, a pilot program was launched titled, "Creativity and Innovation for Effectiveness" (CAIFE).  CAIFE is a unique organizational development program that engages faculty, staff and administrators in the process of institutional transformation. CAIFE is designed to strengthen the culture in order to harness and embrace a lasting environment of innovation and creativity.  The program blends individual development with focused efforts to enhance organizational effectiveness. Now in it's third year, the program includes three distinct phases beginning with an all campus call from the President for ideas to improve services to students, teaching or learning innovations or ways to fix an inefficient process.

Approximately 70 individuals representing faculty, staff and administrators and students were organized into nine teams. Teams work throughout an academic year to implement ideas. Participants also partake in Professional Development focused on building organizational and individual capacities in innovation, process improvement and change management.  At the conclusion, a Showcase of Excellence is held - a campus wide celebration and recognition of success, innovation and best practices

Innovating as Orchestrators of Change

Are you a doer or change agent? At every level of an organization we are challenged by the question of where to focus our time and energy to make a difference.  Orchestrating change demands a mindset and cultivation of mood that puts us in the positive mentality required to inspire, motivate and speak truth to power.  Now more than ever, leaders of our institutions need to come from this place.

What does it mean to be an orchestrator of change and lead others through difficult conversations and decisions?  In this session, we will explore approaches to being a change agent and how to play a central role in transforming how we work together to ultimately impact the student experience in a positive way.
